Brief History of the Universal Translator (Star Trek)

Certifiably Ingame: It would be such an annoying device. No hear me out. The Universal Translator as depicted in Star Trek is never truly addressed in function. We know what i'ts supposed to do, for convenience, but would it really work? Wouldn't you just have two voice overlapping at the same time or does it actually read thoughts like the TOS version suggests? Or does it produce a noise cancelling signal that hides the speakers words then replaces them with a different language?
